Sparks police arrest man on suspicion of illegally performing cosmetic surgery - Reno Gazette

Sparks Police have arrested a 40-year-old man for practicing medicine without a license.

Edgar Orozco-Abundis, 40, was arrested late Monday. He is accused of performing a cosmetic surgery on someone in their Sparks home. Immigration officials have also placed a hold on the suspected illegal immigrant.

According to police, Orozco-Abundis admitted to compleding medical procedures on family and friends.

State Health Division officials said it?s possible Orozco-Abundis is just one of many in a network of people performing back room surgeries without a medical license, or performing them in non-medical facilities.

State health officials are hosting a town hall meeting tonight at the Boys and Girls Club of the Truckee Meadows about protection from these illegal surgeries.

Officials said they will inform citizens how to get treatment by licensed providers, how to verify whether a doctor is licensed to practice medicine and whether he or she has any violations, how to report someone practicing without a license and what to do to ensure safety if one receives services from an unlicensed person.

The meeting will be held between 6 and 7:30 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Club, 2860 E. Ninth St., Reno.
