Norwegian killer had plastic surgery to look more Aryan, says intelligence chief - Daily Mail

  • Anders Behring Breivik bought bomb-making materials from Britain using eBay

The right-wing extremist who massacred 77 people during a twin terror attack in Norway had plastic surgery to make him look more Aryan, according to a intelligence official.

Anders Behring Breivik, 32, has the blond hair, blue eyes and strong features stereotypically associated with the group.

However, according to Janne Kristiansen, the head of Norway's intelligence agency the PST, there is no way that Breivik's look was natural.

'You do not have that Aryan look naturally in Norway,' she said.

'Hitler would have had him on posters. He has the perfect, classic Aryan face.

'He must have had a facelift,' she added in an interview with The Sunday Times.

This information fits with the reminiscences of an old schoolfriend, who has recalled that Breivik boasted of having had plastic surgery a decade ago, a time when he had befriended 'a group of people obsessed with their bodies'.

'I remember we were at a party, and he told me he had had his nose and chin operated on by a plastic surgeon in America,' the friend told the Sunday Telegraph.

The revelation comes at a time when the full extent of Breivik's British connections is coming clear as it emerges that he sourced some of his bomb-making equipment from the UK.

An investigation into how Breivik acquired material to make the car bomb which killed eight people in Oslo has revealed that he used online auctioneer eBay to buy ingredients from all around the world, including Britain.

Using the name 'andersbrei', Breivik bought a pound of sulphur from a supplier in north London, while the 'hazmat' suit he wore to mix chemicals was purchased from a Briton now living in the U.S.

Andrew Christou, who sold Breivik the sulphur, said that when he realised his unwitting involvement in the attack, 'my shock and horror was multiplied 10-fold'.

Breivik, who is believed to have considered targeting other high-profile sites in Norway such as a royal palace and the headquarters of the Labour party, has made bizarre demands about his time in prison and in court.

He has requested not to be given halal meat and, having been refused permission to wear a military uniform, he says he will only wear a red Lacoste jumper during his public appearances.

Norwegian investigators are currently going through the 1,500-page 'manifesto' which he posted online before attacking Oslo and the island of Utoya. Officials believe it may be deliberately cryptic in order to perpetuate Breivik's mysterious image.

'He wants it to be like a Da Vinci Code novel,' said one source. 'He has created a mystery and as long as that mystery is there his message will remain in the public domain.'

Breivik's links with the far-right English Defence League have also become clearer, as it emerged that he was a member of the Norwegian Defence League, an offshoot of the British group.

Lena Andreassen, a former leader of the NDL, confirmed that Breivik had been a member of the group, which is led by British football hooligans, but said: 'I kicked him out because he had extremist views.'

Meanwhile, a senior EDL member has come under attack for starting a debate on which 'liberal twits' deserved to be executed.

Alan Lake, who claims to be the EDL's 'events director', ran an article on his extremist website predicting that Britain would 'start to fragment into Islamic enclaves', according to the Observer.

Lake then encouraged his readers to suggest names of those who should be forced to live in those enclaves, 'and who we will execute if they sneak out.' He nominated David Cameron, Nick Clegg and Rowan Williams, but later removed the post.

1 In 3 Nose Job Patients Has Body Dysmorphic Disorder: Study - Huffington Post

Plastic surgeons should take a good, hard look at their nose-job patients before taking out the knife -- and not just to figure out where to cut.

According to a new study, one-third of people who get nose jobs also have symptoms of moderate to severe body dysmorphic disorder, a mental illness where a person is so dissatisfied with real or imagined flaws that it disrupts daily life. The disorder can lead to suicidal thoughts, eating disorders, depression, anxiety and -- as is evidenced by this study -- unnecessary cosmetic surgery.

The new research, reported in the August issue of the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, also shows that body dysmorphic disorder is especially common among people who have had more than one nose job.

However, the study was relatively small -- in just 250 Belgian people who sought plastic surgery to change their noses' appearance. Researchers from the University Hospitals Leuven in Belgium cautioned that larger studies are needed to confirm the finding, "as they will help us in the establishment of guidelines concerning patient selection in aesthetic surgery," they wrote.

The finding is one of the reasons why board-certified plastic surgeons screen their patients thoroughly before performing surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons President Dr. Phillip Haeck told ABC News. However, noncertified surgeons may not follow the same protocols.

"Hopefully board certified surgeons are perceptive enough to turn these people down for surgery, but there are a lot of people who are not board certified, and my concern is that these people will shop around until someone will do their surgery," Haeck told ABC News. "The lesson here is for plastic surgeons to remember to say 'no.'"

Body dysmorphic disorder affects 1 to 2 percent of all people, FYI Living reported, and is treated with medication and behavioral therapy.

People with the disorder are most often concerned with their skin imperfections -- such as wrinkles, acne or scars -- or their facial features, the most common one being the nose, according to the Cleveland Clinic. They are also often obsessed with extra hair (or lack thereof) on their heads or bodies.

Plastic Surgery 2.0: What's promising in non-surgical face and body fixes - Monsters and Critics

\n

Dr. Alexander Rivkin is a Yale-trained cosmetic surgeon based in Los Angeles. His practice is focused exclusively on non surgical aesthetic treatments and he regularly trains other doctors on injectables and other skin rejuvenating methods.

\n

Dr. Rivkin is also Monsters and Critics go-to expert for all questions pertaining to facial plastic surgery and has commented on major news stories involving celebrity face-work as well as sharing his expert opinion on various procedures.

\n

At his offices inside Westside Aesthetics, Dr. Rivkin and his staff employ a variety of the latest nonsurgical cosmetic procedures.

\n

Monsters and Critics asked Dr. Rivkin about some of the latest procedures available.

\n

What are some of your machines thatyou use for various purposes?

\n

Dr. Rivkin: I have the Soprano hair removal laser - it is a diode laser (the industry gold standard), but it is one of the only ones on the market that has significantly reduced treatment pain. My patients tell me that they no longer dread their bikini laser session.

\n

I also have the Fraxel Re:store - a great skin resurfacing technology that has shown consistent safety and efficacy over the 5 years that it has been in widespread use throughout the world. it is my go to resurfacing laser for patients who cannot afford the downtime of a more intense laser like the active fx fractional CO2.

\n
\n

And I have the ActiveFX / DeepFX Fractional CO2 laser. This is a device manufactured by Lumenis - the oldest and most reliable laser company in the world. CO2 laser has always been the gold standard of skin resurfacing but it was always a traumatic procedure to undergo.

\n

By fractioning the big beam into lots of little beams, the downtime is reduced to a week and discomfort is much less than before and the results are still excellent.

\n

I have the latest generation of Thermage Radiofrequency skin tightening technology. The device can be used on the face, neck or body and we get subtle, yet effective skin tightening for those patients that are good candidates for the procedure.

\n

I am always evaluating new technology and am currently looking at Zeltiq and Ulthera. i always want to be certain of the efficacy of every deviceI get.

\n

My patients deserve more than the latest beauty fad, so I always wait to adopt devices until they have proven themselves over several years on the market.

\n

This is whyI did not get Zerona. It came out with huge fanfare and publicity, but most doctors are now aware that the device is about as effective at reducing fat as a flashlight (or 8 flashlights attached to octopus arms) is.

\n

With the tougher job markets and aging population, the rush to try these various non-surgical cosmetic devices and treatments is skyrocketing. But Dr. Rivkin warns about going to Medi-Spas and strip mall Botox bargain storefronts where the people administering the injections may not have sufficient training in aesthetic medicine.

\n

Dr. Rivkin: You have to have confidence in the person providing your aesthetic injections or laser procedure. These days, there are plenty of doctors, nurses and PAs across a variety of specialties who are very skilled at these procedures because they do them all the time, and they have the necessary training.

\n

Unfortunately, there are still a large number of fly-by-night places that lure patients in with cut-rate Botox and discounted laser treatments. I recommend everyone to go by reputation and recommendations, not price.

\n

If a place feels sketchy or dirty - listen to your instincts and walk out the door.
If you get ushered in to a "consultant" who pressures you into buying multi-thousand dollar packages and tries to tempt you with prices that are only good if you book right now - run! You have to either meet the doctor responsible for the facility or know that he is easily available in case anything goes wrong.

\n

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery ? and the American Society of Cosmetic Dermatology and Aesthetic Surgery report that over 80% of procedures done for cosmetic reasons were non-surgical. What do you make of surgery on the face versus other procedures?

\n

Dr. Rivkin: My philosophy is that your first cosmetic surgery is your best shot at a great result, whether its a facelift or rhinoplasty or blepharoplasty.

\n

Revision procedures are notoriously risky because the scarring in the tissue makes complications, as well as poor results which are much more likely. Procedures like facelifts have about a ten-year duration of effect.

\n

So, to avoid multiple revision procedures,I always tell people to put surgery off until you absolutely need it. If there is a way to accomplish your aesthetic goals non-surgically, you should do that for as long as possible.

Spit's secret: Saliva can reveal plastic surgery

(Discover)

While you may be able to hide your age with makeup and plastic surgery, don't think that your deception is foolproof. Researchers have now developed a technique to ascertain your age to within five years using only your saliva.

The new method, published in the journal PLoS One, could someday be used by forensic experts to pinpoint the age of crime suspects.

The researchers began by taking saliva samples from 34 pairs of identical, male twins between the ages of 21 and 55 years old. Eric Vilain, the lead researcher and director of the Center for Society and Genetics at UCLA, was originally interested in studying sexual orientation differences in identical twins. He wanted to see if environmental influences?diet, stress, exposure to toxins, etc.?caused any epigenetic changes that could contribute to the twins' sexuality differences.

Vilain and his team focused their attention on methylation, a chemical process where a methyl group (a carbon atom bonded to three hydrogen atoms) attaches to a gene and affects how it turns on or off. Unexpectedly, the team found that the degree of methylation in certain areas of the genome increased with the age of the twins. They repeated their experiments with a population of singletons and found the same pattern.

The scientists then identified the two genes that had the strongest age-related link to methylation, and used them to build a predictive model. When they plugged in data from the saliva samples, they were able to predict people's ages to within five years.

Recently, scientists learned that they could use carbon-14 dating to accurately determine, give or take a year, the birth year of people born since the atomic tests of the Cold War (pdf). That method, however, uses tooth enamel, which is harder to get than saliva. Moreover, the technique will no longer be valid once the level of carbon-14 in the atmosphere returns to its baseline level (in a few decades).

In previous studies, scientists noticed significant DNA methylation differences in people with age-related diseases. Knowing this, Vilain notes that the new research could prove to be a valuable tool in health care. "Doctors could predict your medical risk for a particular disease and customize treatment based on your DNA's true biological age, as opposed to how old you are," he said in a prepared statement.

The technique needs to be replicated and confirmed before it can be used in real crime scene investigations. Future research should also look into whether the method can be adapted for other tissue samples, like hair and skin. Vilain and his team are now studying how biological age relates to health. They are looking at whether people with lower biological ages live longer and suffer fewer diseases than their peers with higher biological ages.

Tasmanian Devils have plastic surgery - ABC Online

SHANE MCLEOD: Researchers who are trying to find ways to save the Tasmanian devil from a contagious facial cancer are having to rethink their approach.

The devils are being killed by a contagious facial tumour disease, and the scientists have always assumed the animals inbreeding is to blame. But a plastic surgery experiment is making scientists reconsider the reason why the devils are being affected by the deadly tumours.

Felicity Ogilvie, reports from Hobart.

FELICITY OGILVIE: Plastic surgery is yet another tool that scientists are using to fight the facial tumour disease that is killing the Tasmanian devil but it is creating more questions than answers at the moment.

KATHY BELOV: So this experiment was carried out to see if devils were able to reject foreign tissue because we have been saying for a long time that devils have low genetic diversity so therefore they should essentially be able to exchange organs or skin. In this case there was an experiment carried out where skin was transplanted between five different devils and to our surprise the devils actually rejected the foreign skin.

FELICITY OGILVIE: That's Associate Professor Kathy Belov. She's a scientist from the University of Sydney who has been studying the devil's genetics. She provided researchers in Hobart with a map of the devil's genes that helped them choose the most similar animals to experiment on.

Associate Professor Greg Woods from the Menzies Research Institute says a plastic surgeon from a local hospital came up to a bush site near Hobart to do the skin grafts.

GREG WOODS: He really revolutionised the whole technique and brought out all his equipment. What was really amazing was this was done out in the field, in the back of a truck and that the skill of the surgeon plus all the veterinary assistance, the surgery went beautifully so it was really quite a nice way in which to do this research.

FELICITY OGILVIE: Associate Professor Woods assumed that the devils would accept skin grafts from each other. That would have confirmed the researchers theory that the reason why the animals are catching the contagious facial cancer from each other is because the devils are so inbred.

But the devil's didn't accept each other's skin.

GREG WOODS: The graft got rejected quite nicely which shows that the devil's do have enough diversity to recognise foreign tissue.

FELICITY OGILVIE: Do you know then why they don't recognise the tumour as being foreign?

GREG WOODS: Oh, there is something special about the tumour cells which we are working very hard to find out.

FELICITY OGILVIE: Associate Professor Kathy Belov says the researchers will now start studying the tumour cells.

KATHY BELOV: This has probably confused us more than anything else but you know, we are going to come back and start thinking about what it means and how we can use this information to help us beat the disease.

GREG WOODS: What we are going to be doing is growing out the tumour cells in culture and then we'll extract all the proteins and run them onto a gel so we'll take those proteins out and just analyse them at a molecular level.

FELICITY OGILVIE: And what are you looking for?

GREG WOODS: We are trying to see what's missing or what's different about those tumour cells that the immune system doesn't see.

FELICITY OGILVIE: Finding out more about the tumour will help the researchers work on a vaccine and the devils need all the help they can get - 80 per cent of the wild population has already been wiped out and the animals are headed for extinction.

SHANE MCLEOD: Felicity Ogilvie.

Cosmetic Surgery Murders - EmpowHer

If you don?t follow cosmetic surgery, it may escape your attention that an Arizona cosmetic surgeon has just been found guilty on three counts of murder. Last Friday, the Phoenix New Times reported that Dr. Peter Normann was convicted of two counts of second-degree murder and one count of manslaughter (Hampton 1).

The charges stem from the deaths of three of Normann?s liposuction patients?one in 2006 and two in 2007. In each case, incompetence, negligence, or a combination caused the patient to lose his or her life.

In the first case, a man who elected to have liposuction with Normann died on the operating table due to an overdose of anesthetic. Normann botched the emergency intubation procedure and the patient could not be revived.

The second fatality was a female patient whose combination procedure with Normann included fat transfer to the buttocks. She died when the injected fat traveled to her lungs as a pulmonary embolism (Hampton 1).

After those two tragedies, which ultimately resulted in the second-degree murder convictions, Normann?s license was restricted. He then teamed up with Gary Page, a gentleman who is a homeopathic doctor, not an M.D., and the two handled another female liposuction patient. Again, the patient reacted to the anesthesia and again, efforts to revive her via intubation were unsuccessful because the tube was not inserted properly. Page performed the liposuction, hence the manslaughter charge for Normann (Hampton 1).

If you think it?s unusual for a doctor to be charged with murder for performing a medical procedure, you?re right. According to Law Med Consulting?s Law Med Blog, when a physician is found to be negligent, they are usually sued in civil court for malpractice. This points to the serious nature of Normann?s actions.

In finding the physician guilty of all charges, the jury determined that the case had met the criteria of the Arizona law for manslaughter, defined as recklessly causing the death of another person, and second-degree murder, meaning recklessly engaging in conduct that creates a grave risk of death and thereby causes the death of another person (Law Med 1).

Cosmetic procedures: How far can one go? - IBNLive.com

HYDERABAD: Does the clich ?beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder? still stand good in today?s world where people are more open to altering their natural look? How can one define beauty? Is it skin deep or superficial? All this and more were discussed at an interactive session hosted by Young FICCI Ladies Organisation (YFLO) Hyderabad Chapter at The Park hotel on Wednesday.

The discussion was preceded by insightful talks by Dr Jamuna Pai and Dr Srinivas Surapaneni on ?Cosmetic Procedures, How far can one go?? in a packed hall with women wanting to know more about various cosmetic procedures.

?How far can one go?? This question is often asked because cosmetic surgery can sometimes turn out to be an addiction and one always wonders as to where should the line be drawn,? said Pai, who got into the aesthetic industry to pursue her lifelong passion for beauty. She further added, ?There are various aspects to be kept in mind while going for a cosmetic surgery --- right from the reliability and experience of the doctor, to your own perseverance to maintain yourself after the surgery because surgery alone is not the answer to all your problems. Lifestyle makes a lot of difference.?

According to Pai, inner health and emotional state are the most important aspects. ?Even though cosmetic surgeries are helpful, a healthy diet and a good lifestyle are the pillars to maintain one?s body,? confessed Pai, who came to the city in 2000 and believes that the idea of a cosmetic surgery was taboo back then.

?As as now, I don?t think it?s a taboo anymore. People are a lot more open to talk about their surgeries when compared to back when I started,? revealed the doctor.

While Pai spoke about the transition of cosmetic surgery from being a taboo to status symbol, Dr Srinivas Surapaneni threw light upon various types of cosmetic surgeries that are available today.

Post the talks, followed various questions from the audience, which clearly proved the point that people in the city are no more shying away from talking about cosmetic procedures and do not mind taking that extra mile and paying that extra buck to look ?perfect?.

Elizabeth Hurley Denies Boyfriend Shane Warne Wears Makeup, Had Plastic Surgery - Softpedia

Many months after divorcing husband of 3 years Arun Nayar, Elizabeth Hurley is still going strong with Australian cricketer Shane Warne ? so strong that she?s even taken to her Twitter to rubbish allegations that he uses her makeup products whenever they go out together, as a couple.

Some weeks ago, as they were heading out of the house to attend a public function together, Shane appeared to be wearing just as much (if not actually more) foundation and lipgloss than his date, Liz herself.

At the same time, he also appeared ?tighter? in face, especially in the area around the eyes, which prompted a lot of talk of how Liz ?made? him get a complete makeover (see attached photo).

The star is now denying such claims on Twitter, saying that Shane doesn?t wear makeup. As for why his face looks different, she says it?s because he?s lost some weight.

?SW does not wear eye makeup or have an ?eye liner tattoo??. his eyes were born that way! Neither does he wear lip gloss fyi hacks in gossip press; he?d prob just given me a kiss & got a bit of mine,? Liz writes on her Twitter page.

?And re ?looking different,? you try losing 25lbs and see if you do!? she adds, only half-denying he had any plastic surgery.

Of the procedures he?s believed to have had as part of the complete makeover, voices in the blogosphere say the most obvious are double chin removal, eye work, facelift, Botox and fillers.

That?s just as false, Shane too writes on his Twitter page, using the same weight loss ?excuse? for his drastically altered appearance.

?Questions re facelift/Botox etc are absolute rubbish. I am 86kg. Lost 7kg and close to being the fittest I have ever been. Fitness and being healthy is now a daily habit I feel great and never been happier in my life,? he says.

?I am also eating very healthily and am flattered that people think I look younger. I have worked hard over the last five months on fitness,? he adds.

Cheryl Cole - Cheryl Cole Doesn't Understand Cosmetic Surgery

Cheryl Cole doesn't understand why people have cosmetic surgery.

The British beauty has recently relocated to Los Angeles to work on the US version of 'The X Factor' and is astonished by how many people have gone under the knife and lost their "unique" look.

She said: "Everything in the US is a little larger than life.

"I've already seen a few funny sights. I can't quite get my head around everyone having the same nose, because I think it's the unique things about your face that make you beautiful.

"I'm not judging, but unless something is really getting you down, it's best not to mess with nature."

The 'Parachute' hitmaker's new job in the US means she is travelling more, so she is planning to take extra precautions to look after her skin.

She explained to Grazia magazine: "I used to sit on a plane with all my make-up on the whole way, but now I realise I can't do this if I'm flying so much. It's so bad for your skin.

"Now, I'll smother on oil or serum once I'm on board. Actually, I'm going to ask the air hostesses what they use, they must know a few tricks to stop the flying from messing with your skin."

Plastic surgery changed my wife?and destroyed our marriage - Inquirer.net

By:

DEAR EMILY,

I am entering my 67th year, and reading some of the problems in your columns made me reminisce about my own life.

My wife and I came from poor families and worked our way through high school and college to finish our education. Through sheer determination, frugality, and working almost 20 hours everyday, we were able to start a little business. It succeeded well enough to send our three children not only to good schools in Manila, but overseas, too, for their post-graduate degrees.

When she reached her 40s, my wife did not only find so much time and money in her hands?she also started finding fault in herself. She was already pretty to me, but suddenly she was complaining about how her nose was too thick, her breasts too small, her chin too weak, and other stuff I couldn?t even see.

The crack in our marriage apparently started with the first of a series of her plastic surgeries. Once, I was gone almost a month for business meetings, and when I came back and saw what she did to her breasts, I couldn?t say anything. I didn?t know whether to stare or look away from her. She felt very hurt at my reaction. It took great effort for me to make love to her again after that. I was truly horrified to touch her for fear that her breasts would leak or get smashed!

Her unhappiness with her looks continued. One day, at breakfast, I almost didn?t recognize her! She looked so heavily made up so early in the morning, and when I asked if we were expecting company, she looked at me funny. Turns out she had tattooed her eyebrows, her eyeliner, and even lined her lips permanently!

Instead of finding it amusing, I felt disgust at how weird she looked. Even her skin, which was meticulously cared for monthly by her dermatologists, appeared scaly! I?ve not been remiss in telling her how pretty she already was, but that only started an argument.

She used to be this woman who was so naturally pretty that we?d laugh at her friends who were so vain. But she turned out to be exactly like them.

I am a quiet, simple man with simple pleasures and desires. I worked hard all my life hoping to give my family everything I never had. My wife and I were together through all that, but instead of appreciating our blessings, money became a burden to her, and she couldn?t seem to wait to throw it all away. I wish she spent it more in educating herself or doing charity work. She?s always with her friends, shopping here and abroad and getting fixated on fixing something in their bodies.

Her unhappiness with everything made us snarl and throw harsh words at each other. The rift in our marriage just widened, and we drifted farther and farther apart. Eventually, our kids had their own families, and my wife and I had to find solace somewhere else. She went from one affair to another, and nothing lasted more than a few months.

While my friends went for young girls, I found an educated, feet-on-the-ground woman of my age whose wisdom constantly astonished me. She already tried marriage once, and that was enough for her. We have been together 18 years now.

My wife has her own life, and is still vain as ever. Oftentimes, I?d think of our ?hungry years??the struggles and hardships we went through?and still feel pangs of regret. I look back at how happy we seemed to be then.

?Yesterday?s Man

Your marital experience certainly gives pause, and there?s no answer needed here, is there? But for purposes of reminiscing, let?s see what happened.

Your wife obviously took the angst and poverty of her childhood a little harder than you did yours. She must have been so scarred from fighting the windmills of want and despair, that upon conquering them with your newfound wealth, she started to unleash all her desires and dreams on what was nearest and dearest to her?herself! Weren?t you there, her primary spectator, seated front and center, watching her destroy every remnant of her old self?

There must have been something so hollow, so deeply empty in her being, that no amount of self-indulgence could fill it up. Sadly, this preoccupation with remaking herself made you drift away from her. You could have stopped her, but you probably were too busy or just didn?t have the patience to buoy her spirits enough.

She mistakenly thought, perhaps, that despite your protestations, you were indeed proud of her new features. She failed to read what your mind was silently screaming at her?that she was transforming herself into a complete stranger, and hopelessly eroding your affection for her.

You clearly had the same problem that Donald Trump, the American entrepreneur, had with his wife when she underwent the same procedures. He remarked how he ?couldn?t touch those plastic breasts, or look at her trout pout.? His marriage to her went downhill, and he ended up with a woman with her natural looks intact.

Looking back at the past is certainly good for the spirit. But much as you wish you had done it differently, your hungry years will always remain great fodder for reminiscing.

Trends In Plastic Surgery Show The Growth Of Non-Surgical Procedures

Main Category: Cosmetic Medicine / Plastic Surgery
Article Date: 01 Jun 2011 - 0:00 PDT email icon email to a friendprinter icon printer friendlywrite icon opinions

Non-surgical procedures have dramatically outpaced more traditional cosmetic surgery in the past ten years. Even with plastic surgery advances, the more subtle and less costly changes offered by non-surgical products have wide appeal.

Has the downturn in the economy impacted the demand for cosmetic surgery in the US? According to Atlanta plastic surgeon Dr. Paul Feldman of Advanced Aesthetics, PC, the short answer is no. There has been steady demand for plastic surgery procedures. The industry has changed dramatically in the past ten years, however.

Non-surgical products, such as BOTOX (FDA approved in 2002) and Dysport (FDA approved in 2009), have radically altered the plastic surgery landscape in the last decade. Non-surgical procedures are now more in demand than more traditional surgical procedures. Going by the sheer number of procedures performed, cosmetic surgeons now perform non-surgical procedures 90% of the time. By contrast, non-surgical procedures accounted for only 26% of the procedures performed in 2000.

Statistics supplied by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) confirm that the top 5 surgeries in the Southeast region are breast augmentation, liposuction, eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty, and facelift. Nationwide, tummy tucks (abdominoplasty) replaced facelifts in the top procedure list. The top five non-surgical procedures in the Southeast region are BOTOX/Dysport, wrinkle fillers, chemical peels, laser hair removal, and microdermabrasion.

The Atlanta, Georgia, area reflects these national trends. Women compose a large majority of Atlanta plastic surgery patients, and breast augmentation is still far and away the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure requested. Non-surgical procedures, including wrinkle fillers like Juvederm, have outpaced more extensive surgical procedures. While non-surgical procedures are less expensive and require far less healing time, the results from non-surgical procedures are more subtle, superficial, and temporary.

Drs Feldman, Gronka, and Raniere offer two options for cosmetic enhancement. They perform all surgical options at Advanced Aesthetics, PC in a modern surgicenter that combines a friendly home-like environment with a state-of-the-art medical facility. It is state-licensed and fully accredited. Advanced Aesthetics offers a full range of cosmetic surgical procedures of the face, breast, and body.

Truffles Medispa offers less intense non-surgical procedures such as Botox, Fillers, and Laser procedures for those patients looking to avoid surgery. Truffles is a deluxe Medispa offering these procedures and medical grade skin care, all under a Plastic Surgeon's expertise.

Dr. Alfredo Callanta Offers the Crisalix e-Stetix, the First 3-D Simulator for Plastic Surgery Consultation in the ...

Posted on: Sunday, 26 June 2011, 00:02 CDT

Dr. Callanta (callantaplasticsurgery.com) is first in Manila to offer this ground-breaking e-simulator to patients in Manila, Philippines.

(PRWEB) June 25, 2011

In order to better serve his plastic surgery patients undergoing breast augmentation, Dr. Alfredo Callanta, is the first physician in the Philippines to use a new software program from Crisalix, the e-Stetix 3-D simulator. Developed by engineers in Switzerland, e-Stetix is the first Web-based 3-D physical simulator for breast implant procedures. Dr. Callanta, who is also an anti-aging medicine practitioner, will offer e-Stetix as part of the initial patient consultation for breast augmentation at his practice ? callantaplasticsurgery.com of Manila, Philippines.

e-Stetix is the first simulator for breast enlargement surgeries using the body?s actual physical properties. Using just a few digital pictures from a regular digital camera and the patient?s body measurements, e-Stetix is able to generate a 3-D simulation of the patient?s body and then simulate the results of a breast augmentation procedure by selecting implants from a standard database. All the simulations are calculated instantaneously, giving the patient results in less than 10 seconds.

?This innovative simulation technique takes traditional ?before and after? photos to a new level. Now patients have the capability to actually see what their body will look like with different types and sizes of implants and make better decisions based on realistic 3-D images of their own body before and after surgery.?

Traditionally, 3-D imaging systems have required large elaborate camera systems and required patients to remain uncomfortably still. With the e-Stetix simulator, Dr. Callanta is able to take 3 simple photographs in his Quezon City plastic surgery office and upload the photos securely to Switzerland. There the 3-D reconstruction is accomplished and then the surgical simulation can begin from Dr. Callanta?s office.

Dr. Alfredo Callanta, treats patients at iPrime Center for Surgical Aesthetics in Quezon City and at Clarity Shangri-la Mall in Mandaluyong City, Philippines. He offers consultation and surgical procedures for breast implants, breast augmentation, breast lifts, breast reduction and breast reconstruction using silicon breast implant, fat graft, BRAVA system, and Breform breast support system. iPrime Center for Surgical Aesthetics also offers services for body contouring and other cosmetic surgeries.

For more information about e-Stetix, or to schedule a personal consultation, please call +6329296614/ text +639175229394 or visit callantaplasticsurgery.com.

Dr. Alfredo V. Callanta is a well renowned Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeon in Asia who has built a formidable reputation in Aesthetics Surgery by using a combination of artistry, consummate skill and the latest state of the art techniques.

Dr. Callanta is reputed for his use of fat in the rejuvenation of the face and hand, augmentation of the breast and butt, and the correction of liposuction complication through the use of fat graft. He is also known for his technique in lipo-abdominoplasty where he combines liposuction followed by abdominoplasty to achieve a better contour, shorter scar and faster post operative recovery. Leighton Meester Sues Mom For Getting Plastic Surgery On Her Dime - Ology

Leighton Meester, trying to be the best sister she can, had sent her mother $7,500 a month to help out with her brother Lex, who has 'severe medical issues'. But as it turns out, her mother Constance had been putting the money toward other bills ? plastic surgery bills.

Now as any pissed off daughter would do, Leighton has brought a lawsuit against her mother for misusing the money, according to TMZ.

The 25-year-old Gossip Girl actress claims her mom used the money on Botox, hair extensions, plastic surgery and other personal expenses. But according to Constance, her and her daughter had an agreement. A verbal one a matter of fact, in which Leighton stated she would give her $10,000 a month for the rest of her life.

And now as any pissed off mother would do, Constance has brought a lawsuit against her daughter for reengaging on their agreement. The 55-year-old unemployed mother is asking for $3 million if the actress refuses to pay her the monthly money. But Leighton is insisting there is no such verbal contract and is asking a judge to say so as well.

But it's not like she was the best mom to begin with, after all, Constance did give birth to Leighton while in jail after a drug smuggling conviction. And just this year she was issued a restraining order for allegedly threatening to 'hunt down and kill' Laurel Wigg and her son.

Money issues aside, Leighton does love her mother, you could even say she finds Constance to be an ? inspiration?

"My mother Connie inspires me. She's an amazing woman," she said in an interview with Grazia magazine last year, "When I was a kid I wanted to be an actress and she completely backed me. She is her own person, very eccentric, very individual."

Bristol Palin's new look: Was it cosmetic surgery?

bristol palin

(Credit: AP Photo/Getty Images)

(CBS/AP) Did Bristol Palin have cosmetic surgery? The 20-year-old daughter of failed presidential candidate Sarah Palin says no way. She insists that her new face - thinner, with high cheekbones and a more angular jaw - is the result of surgery, but not of the cosmetic sort.

She says she underwent corrective jaw surgery in December, one month after finishing third on "Dancing with the Stars."

"Yes, it improved the way I look, but this surgery was necessary for medical reasons," she told US magazine. "I wouldn't get plastic surgery unless I got in an accident or something terrible and got disfigured."

Palin said she had the operation so her jaw and teeth could align properly. While growing up, she wore braces and a device to help correct an overbite. But she said her dentist warned her that she'd have to have surgery one day.

Doctors call corrective jaw surgery orthognathic surgery and say it can help with several different problems, including difficulty chewing or biting food and swallowing. The surgery can also reduce chronic jaw pain and excessive tooth wear.

The surgery can take many forms, according to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Bone tissue is often added, taken away, or reshaped - with screws, wires, and rubber bands used to keep the jaws in the new position. Incisions are usually made in the mouth so that scars are not visible.

Orthognathic surgery can dramatically enhance the patient's appearance. As for Palin, she told the magazine, "I look older, more mature and don't have as much of a chubby little baby face."

U of T training program lets patients cut a deal on plastic surgery - Globe and Mail

For two years, Irene Tombolini, a 61-year-old sales consultant for a hair-cosmetics company in Hamilton, Ont., interviewed a series of plastic surgeons before finally settling on Toronto?s Tom Bell as the doctor she would entrust to lift her face.

?He was the best one by far, the only one I met with who explained the procedure to me in a way I could understand and feel comfortable with,? says Ms. Tombolini, who works in an industry where, she says, ?looks really matter.? She?d lost close to 40 pounds over two years, and her face still bore the signs of having carried the extra weight.

The procedure would cost $30,000 if she booked it directly through Dr. Bell, a Canadian-born and -trained cosmetic surgeon of international renown.

But during the consultation, she learned she could get the work done for $17,000, almost half-price, if she did it under the auspices of the academic training program that the University of Toronto?s division of plastic surgery operates out of Dr. Bell?s offices at 199 Avenue Rd.

Home to the Toronto Institute of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, it?s an upscale clinic that Dr. Bell shares with fellow surgeons Trevor Born, Derek Ford, Dimitrios Motakis and Lawrence Tong.

Founded in 1986 by Arnis Freiberg of Toronto Western Hospital as an apprenticeship program for medical doctors in their fifth, or final year, of a plastic-surgery residency, the academic training program (ATP)?s mandate is ?to provide training in plastic surgery and especially cosmetic surgery and to provide affordable aesthetic surgery to the community.?

Modelled along the lines of the patient clinic at U of T?s school of dentistry, which similarly offers discounted services to the public, the ATP is unique to Toronto in being a dedicated surgical site offering cosmetic procedures at up to 70 per cent off what most specialists charge in their own clinics.

?Residents are not let loose on the patients,? stresses Dr. Bell, an associate staff member of U of T?s medical school who has been the ATP?s director of resident training since 1994.

?This is a very controlled situation.?

Typically, Dr. Bell and his colleagues oversee a resident who has come to ATP on a compulsory four-month rotation as a prerequisite to writing final exams for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, the governing body that assigns surgical certificates.

In addition, they mentor a senior fellow, usually a plastic surgeon wanting to extend his or her training beyond a requisite residency program.

The fellow and the resident get experience they would not otherwise get in a classroom setting, participating in patient interviews and doing the surgeries under the guidance of Dr. Bell and his mentoring colleagues.

The discount price for professional services is meant to be an incentive to get patients to agree to get work done by apprentices as opposed to a practising plastic surgeon.

?If money weren?t an object this place wouldn?t exist,? says Dr. Bell, in practice since 1987. ?Why would a patient come to this clinic if not to get a treatment at a reduced price??

For Ms. Tombolini, saving money was an incentive, but she says she ultimately chose to go the ATP route because she liked the fact that her surgery would be strictly supervised by trained professionals every step of the way, from initial consult to post-op.

?Safety was foremost on my mind. Saving money was just a bonus,? she says.

She had taken two years researching clinics, she adds, after becoming aware of the disciplinary hearing involving Behnaz Yazdanfar, the Toronto doctor who in May was found guilty of professional misconduct and deemed incompetent by the College of Physicians and Surgeons following the death of one of her patients and the bungled surgeries of others she performed while practising plastic surgery from 2005 to 2008 without the requisite credentials.

At the ATP, three tiers of supervision are built directly into all treatments, from Botox to breast augmentation.

Performing her cheek lift was ATP fellow Trefor Nodwell, a 35-year old McGill- and Dalhousie-trained plastic surgeon on staff at Carleton Hospital in Ottawa since 2005.

He applied to and was accepted to attend ATP under Dr. Bell?s supervision as a senior fellow from January until the end of June. ?It?s like a mentorship,? he says of the program.

Working alongside him was senior resident Mary-Helen Mahoney, 31, who recently wrote and passed all her exams, and who now is ready to practice cosmetic surgery on her own.

During her course of study, Ms. Mahoney participated in Ms. Tombolini?s surgery.

She knows the patient got the procedure at a huge discount. But in her opinion, that?s not entirely the point.

?You have an ability to make such a significant impact on a person?s appearance but it?s important to do so safely, and that?s what this residency rotation teaches you,? Ms. Mahoney says.

?When training as we are training, focused and dedicated on doing what?s best for the patient, there are no holes in the treatment being given, and I think that?s in the public?s best interest.?
