ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill., Aug. 29, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- From the latest research on breast implants and newly discovered health benefits of liposuction, to the dangers consumers face by choosing unqualified professionals to perform their cosmetic surgery ? the hottest topics, technologies, and research will be presented at Plastic Surgery 11, THE Meeting, the annual scientific assembly of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). The meeting, being held Sept. 23-27 at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, will be attended by more than 5,000 doctors, medical personnel, exhibitors and industry representatives in the field of plastic surgery.

"No other meeting brings together the world's foremost experts on virtually every aspect of cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery to impart their knowledge, research and new techniques," said ASPS President Phillip Haeck, MD. "The meeting will help board-certified plastic surgeons continue to develop innovative procedures, explore emerging trends, and promote patient safety."

ASPS Patient Safety Campaign: "Do Your Homework"

The ASPS will launch its "Do Your Homework" patient safety campaign during Plastic Surgery 11, THE Meeting. The campaign urges consumers to check their doctor's credentials and ensure their cosmetic surgery is performed by plastic surgeons certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS). The ASPS warns that physicians without specialized training may market themselves as "cosmetic surgeons." After all, any physician can wear a white coat, but not all physicians are board-certified in plastic surgery. A 30 second TV public service announcement (PSA) and a multi-media news release will kick-off the launch.

Opening Ceremonies

Keynote speaker and ABC News correspondent, Bob Woodruff, will share his experience regarding the 2006 accident that left him with severe brain injury, during Opening Ceremonies on Friday, Sept. 23 from 4:30 p.m. ? 6:30 p.m. MDT. Assigned to the conflict in Iraq, Woodruff was seriously injured when a roadside bomb struck his vehicle. Woodruff will also help present the annual Patients of Courage: Triumph over Adversity awards honoring inspirational reconstructive plastic surgery patients who've overcome traumatic illness or injury and are now giving back to their communities.

Special Media Event

Hot Topics in Plastic Surgery is one of the most popular panels at the ASPS annual meeting. Again, ASPS is bringing Hot Topics presentations straight to the media during its Hot Topics Overview/Webinar for the Media on Monday, Sept. 26, from 9:00 a.m. ? 10:00 p.m. MDT. During this dynamic hour, journalists can get answers to questions regarding the latest technologies and procedures and engage in conversation with the experts onsite or via webinar.

Exhibit Hall

The Exhibit Hall, open Saturday, Sept. 24 ?
