Moms Talk: Is Kiddie Cosmetic Surgery Ever Ok? - Patch.com

A story that has been kicking around the blogosphere for a few weeks is still furrowing the brows of parents everywhere: The mother of an 8-year-old pageant contestant claimed to have given her little girl Botox injections to give her a competitive edge and to help her feel better about herself.

As the mom told Good Morning America, "I knew she was complaining about her face, having wrinkles, and things like that. When I brought it up to Britney she was all for it."

The version of the story linked above includes photos of the mom -- who is described as ?a part-time aesthetician and no stranger to Botox herself? -- injecting her daughter. And the accompanying video shows the girl talking about how the procedure is painful, but saying with a wise nod that she has gotten used to it. And when the shots are finished, the cherubic child said she looks ?way better, like beautiful and pretty ? all those kind of nice words.?

Lara Spencer, the reporter telling the story describes it as unreal, and it sounds like she and her producers should have followed that instinct before rolling the tape. The mother has since recanted the story, according to an Associated Press report, saying she was paid by the British tabloid that first published her story contending she made up the whole thing and doesn?t even know what Botox is.

The whole thing is rather loony. If the mom is finally telling the truth and the mother-daughter botox injections never happened, then her parenting crime may almost be worse in that she coerced her daughter into lying about it and putting on quite a show for the TV cameras. And of course if she actually did give her daughter Botox injections, that?s also super crazy.

I mean, who does that to their kid? My own kids are still too little to wheedle and plead for everything they impulsively want to have, but I hope that Future Amy will have the courage and good sense to turn them down, especially if the plea is for face-altering cosmetic treatments.

Barring a disfiguring disease or accident or the need for our entire family to join the Witness Protection Program, I can?t imagine that I would ever approve of surgically altering the appearance of my children. To paraphrase Lady Gaga, they are beautiful in their own way because God makes no mistakes, they?re on the right track, baby ? they were born that way. Anyone who would consider something like Botox for their child is bananas; ditto to the parents who give nose jobs for graduation.

But that?s just me ? what do you think? Would you consent to Botox or some similar cosmetic procedure for your children? Is there a line that can be drawn between an injection with effects that will fade and going under the knife? Is there a magical but still minor age you have in your mind where your child would be of sound enough mind to choose surgery for him or herself and you?d be OK with it and help them get what they asked for?
