Marie Shortall had saved up the $3,600 she needed for the liposuction. She made her appointment at the Alyne Center for Cosmetic Medicine in Weston for Saturday. And she kept the whole thing a secret from her teenage daughter.
But while in the midst of the procedure, Shortall, 38, stopped breathing. She was taken to Cleveland Clinic Hospital, where she was declared dead.
?No one should have to go through the pain my family is feeling,? her daughter, 15-year-old Vania Briones, said Tuesday.
No one from the Alyne Center returned calls for comment Tuesday afternoon, nor did the facility?s owners Lynne Ulevich and Dr. Alberto Sant Antonio.
It is unclear who was performing the surgery, but according to Florida records there have been no complaints against Sant Antonio or the facility.
Homicide detectives from the Broward Sheriff?s Office are investigating Shortall?s death.
According to BSO, an employee at the Alyne Center made a 911 call at 3:10 p.m. saying that a woman had ceased breathing.
The Broward Medical Examiner?s Office conducted an autopsy Monday, but has yet to establish a cause of death.
Attorney Michael Freedland said Shortall had gone to the Alyne Center for liposuction around her abdomen area.
?$3,600 is a lot of money to kill a woman,? said Freedland, who is representing Shortall?s family. ?If we find out something wrong that shouldn?t have happened, we will bankrupt the facility and take their licenses.?
Briones said she hopes her mother?s death is the last time someone dies undergoing cosmetic surgery.
?I?ll miss my mom forever,? Briones said.
Shortall?s death is not the first time a patient has died during cosmetic medical surgery in South Florida.
Just last month, Rony Wendrow, 61, died while having her neck and eyelids tightened at Strax Rejuvenation and Aesthetics Institute in Lauderhill.
In December 2010, Lidvian Zelaya, 35, died after problems arose during what was to be a simple procedure transferring fat from her waist to her buttocks.
In September 2009, Rohie Kah-Orukotan, 37 and a mother of three, underwent several seizures during a liposuction operation at Weston MedSpa before being declared brain dead.
In 2002, Olga Myers, a 42-year-old real estate agent, died while undergoing a face-lift at the Cosmetic Surgery Center in Hollywood. State regulators found that no licensed anesthesiologist or nurse anesthetist was present during the surgery.
And in March 2001, Vera Lawrence of Carol City died after too much silicone was injected in her buttocks during a ?pumping party? at a Miramar home.
