Victim's family protests as couple accepts reduced charges in Las Vegas ... - Washington Post

LAS VEGAS ? A husband and wife who performed an illegal buttocks enhancement surgery that resulted in a Las Vegas woman?s death are waiting to be sentenced on reduced charges after accepting a plea deal.

Ruben Matallana-Galvas (MAH?-tie-YAHN?-uh GAHL-vis) and Carmen Torres-Sanchez pleaded guilty Thursday to charges of manslaughter, conspiracy and practicing medicine without a license in the death of 42-year-old Elena Caro.

The Colombian couple pleaded not guilty to murder in May and was scheduled to stand trial in February.

Caro?s family is challenging the plea deal, saying only a trial would deliver justice for her death. More than 20 of her relatives protested the agreement at Thursday?s court hearing in Las Vegas.

An autopsy showed Caro died from an allergic reaction to the anesthesia commonly used in cosmetic surgery procedures.
