Higher costs give Hong Kong cosmetic surgery industry the snip - Monsters and Critics

Regional rivals such as Taiwan and South Korea have attracted droves of newly rich mainland Chinese people seeking treatment, the Sunday Morning Post said.

\'Medical tourism is a hot topic across the whole world. Generally speaking, India gets most of the Western patients; Thailand gets most Middle-Eastern tycoons post-September 11; Singapore catches a lot of the Southeast Asian rich; and Korea gets the Chinese clients,\' Dr Ying Shun-yeun said.

\'Hong Kong and Taiwan want a share of the growing China market, but here we are not well-prepared for this: our private hospitals are limited by bed numbers and high costs,\' Ying said.

\'We have a customised system for Chinese patients,\' said Julie Lee, spokeswoman for Dong Yang Plastic Surgery Hospital in Seoul, South Korea. About 70 per cent of its international patients are from China.

Newly affluent mainland Chinese seeking facelifts, tummy tucks and similar beauty enhancing treatments are also set to boost Taiwan\'s medical tourism industry by 20 per cent a year over the next several years.

Part of the expected growth is due to easier travel between Taiwan and China with the introduction of direct air and sea links.

Simple procedures, including Botox injections to smooth wrinkles, are popular.

But the most favoured procedures in the region are to remove bags under the eyes and to create double eyelids to make the eyes look bigger.
