Why is the U.S. military paying for tummy-tuck surgeries and other weight loss surgeries for the spouses of service-members?

An investigation by KIRO-TV uncovered some interesting numbers.

The military spent over $360 million on weight loss surgeries in the last ten years, many of the surgeries were elective or cosmetic and should have been paid for by patients. The KIRO report also found the military is paying for spouses to get breast implants and brow lifts for free.

More than 300 weight loss surgeries will be performed at Madigan Army Medical Center at Joint Base Lewis-McChord this year. The military says the surgeries will prevent health care costs down the line.

But these surgeries are the most expensive and most popular operations in the service.
